“The Theater has been transformed from it’s usual configuration into a theatre in the round venue by Scenic and Costume Designer Mina Kinukawa and it really enables Dolo and Johnson to get that engagement with the audience going. It was the right decision for this show, and plays a key part in establishing an all in this together vibe.”
The Stages of MN
“As for the actual set, the Jungle reconfigured its space from a proscenium stage to an almost bare runway designed by Mina Kinukawa with tiered aisles of seats on either side. This overhaul, …works perfectly for Every Brilliant Thing to keep the entire audience within a few rows of the narrator. Director Meredith McDonough puts the space to great use, keeping the narrator turning from one side to the other, charging up and down stage, stepping off the stage to audience level, and going into the aisles. The effect draws us ever more closely to both the story and the distress the narrator lays at our feet, as if we are seated not in a theater but in her living room.
Arthur Dorman Talkin’ Broadway
“Another thing that makes this feel like a communal event is the design of the show. I've never seen the Jungle Theater like this. They removed several rows of seats near the stage and constructed a new stage in that space, and moved those rows of seats onto the usual stage to create a corridor or traverse stage. JuCoby performs on the long narrow stage, populated with just a table, a few props, and some rugs, to the audience on two sides of him. He often jumps down from the stage, sitting on the edge or walking through the aisles, making eye contact with the audience while the house lights are up for the whole show, because we're all in this together.”
