“The tree was the first thing I saw upon entering the theater for Donja R. Love's Sugar in Our Wounds, the current offering from Penumbra. The tree is a mammoth construction on the audience left side of the stage, covered in weathered bark with thick, muscular branches that spread out and reach up into the rafters, through the roof, and into the clouds for all we can tell. Those branches are fully leafed, with dense shards of Spanish moss hanging down, as if the tree is reaching for the sky while claiming dominion on the ground below as well. It is extraordinary (huzzahs to set designer Mina Kinukawa).”

Dorman, Arthur. “Regional Reviews: Minneapolis/St. Paul Sugar in Our Wounds Penumbra Theatre.” Talkin’ Broadway.

“It places us in a part of the plantation where the enslaved reside, a small cottage near a giant kudzu-draped tree that dominates Mina Kinukawa’s set. It stands as a reminder of the larger sweep of history and a comforting presence for a group of people desperately in need of one. But it’s also been a place of execution for generations.

Hubbard, Rob, Pioneer Press, February 26, 2023

“The design of the show is gorgeous, all elements working together to create the natural landscape of the plantation.”
